The trademark of the Peruvian is definitely the hair. Often confused with the Silkie, the Peruvian guinea pig has long, even hair. They can be marked, tricolor, bicolor, agouti or solid colors. The long hair of the Peruvian breed can reach 20 inches long. Their hair needs constant and daily brushing to avoid tangles. A few things that can differentiate a Silkie from a Peruvian is the length of the hair, the Peruvian hair is the longest. These guinea pigs have an approximate size of 10 to 12 inches and have a life span of 6 to 8 years. The Peruvian guinea pig’s diet is really not different from the other guinea pigs. This means there isn’t anything in particular that Peruvians guinea pigs eat that others guinea pigs doesn’t. Because of their vitamin C deficiency, they need plenty of it. Guinea pigs don’t subsist on timothy hay alone; they need greens, healthy treats and pellets specially designed for guinea pigs. A rich and varied diet is the way to go with them.

Due to the fast turnonver of these pets, it is difficult to provide the exact date of birth.

The babies are mostly in between 7-11 Weeks of Age.

Care Guide and Recommendations:

Habitat

• A Roomy Cage (Preferable: Medium- Large sized cage). Keep open most of the times.
• Guinea Pigs love corners! Use them all.
• Bedding (Preferable: Fresh and Comfy Recycled Paper Bedding)
• Litter Box

• Food Bowl (Usually included in Cages)
• Water Bottle (Usually included in Cages)

• Toys (They love to chew, therefore, providing a few toys helps in catering to a healthy lifestyle for the pet!)

Diet Plan

• Pellets (Preferable: Extrusion Pellets; designed to create a mess free environment)
• Hay (Recommendation: Rotating between different hays provides variety for the animal so that they don’t get bored of eating the same food over and over again!). Secondly, nature has given different benefits to differnt kind Hays. Feeding same kind Hay may lack nutrition present from other kind.
  • ALFALFA; High in Fibre, High in Protein, Promotes Glossy Coat.
  • TIMOTHY; High in FIbre, High in Protein, Low in Calcium.
  • BOTANICAL; Fragrant, Flavour-Packed, Low in Protein, Rich blend of Herbs.

Regular Maintenance

• Clean Cage
  • Urine / Poo Stink. Use of Odor Control Spray helps reduce Waste Odor.
  • Poo is non-toxic and perfectly fine to pickup and put into corner toilet  for training. Flies love Poo and lay eggs. So ensure to clean cage everyday.
